We all have those moments when the stress consumes us and we freak out.
Trying to find a calm balance to our lives can be difficult. There’s work, friends, family, pets, kids. Our days can seem like it’s a constant go, go, go. Go to work, go home, go to the dry cleaners, go walk the dog, go pay the bills, go to the supermarket. This list can go on and on.
And technology! That adds to stress too without you even realizing it. I mean come on, how many of us check our Facebook newsfeed, or Instagram before we’re even out of bed in the morning? I’ll admit I do. Oh, add emails to that list too. I’m guilty of checking all 5 of my email accounts before I’m out of bed in the morning too.
So here’s some ways I nip stress in the butt right before I feel a meltdown approaching…
1. Face it
Deal with the problem head on. Sometimes stress is induced by ignoring an issue or procrastinating. That phone call you know you have to make to get your doctor appointment set up? Don’t put it off. You know if you put it off you’ll be thinking all day about having to make that call. Procrastinating just adds to the level of stress that is so unnecessary.
2. Exercise
Now, I am not claiming to be someone who exercises everyday but on those days I do, I feel so much better. Sometimes just sweating it out can clear my mind of any stress. Find something you like to do – walking the dog, running, riding a bike. Seriously anything just get up and get going. It helps, I promise. Walking the dog is my biggest stress reliever.
3. Read
Grab a book, curl up in a corner, and get lost. Sometimes getting lost in another world helps. If your focusing on someone else’s story, you won’t be focusing on your own. Instant stress reliever! As soon as I open a book, or my Nook, I forget about everything else.
4. Power down
All those iPhones, iPads, computers and whatever else you have – shut it off! Or at least silence it. Make an effort to not jump right on your phone to check everyone’s status first thing in the morning. The first thing you do and the last in a day should not be updating Facebook. Drop that fear and anxiety of not knowing what’s going on in the social networking world. It will still be there without the constant checking. I’m still trying to work on this myself but I’m getting much better.
5. Yoga
Yes technically this is considered exercise but it’s a different type. I’m a newbie to yoga and so far I really enjoy it. It’s very relaxing and forces me to focus on one thing.
